How it works

How to add an outline to a sprite

  1. Step 1: Add your sprite

Choose, drop or paste a sprite with a transparent background. A whole folder works too.

  2. Step 2: Pick the outline

Set the thickness and colour, rounded or square corners, outside the drawing or inside it.

  3. Step 3: Download the PNG

Save one sprite, or every sprite in the batch with the same outline, as a ZIP.

Sprite Outline

The outline you would draw by hand

  • Whole pixels only

The outline is made of solid pixels in one colour, with no blur and no soft edge.

  • Rounded or square

The classic outline that leaves diagonal corners open, or the heavier one that closes them.

  • Room made for it

The canvas grows by the outline’s thickness, so a sprite that touches its edge is not cut off.

  • Any colour

Black, white, a dark shade from your palette, or any colour you pick.

Outlines in pixel art

How the outline is made

Every clear pixel that touches the drawing takes the outline colour. With rounded corners only the pixels directly above, below and beside the drawing count, which leaves the diagonal corners open: the outline pixel artists draw by hand. Square corners count the diagonals too.

The outline is made of whole, solid pixels. A soft edge or a faint glow already in the image is kept and laid over the outline, so anti-aliased art gets a clean outline too.

Choosing an outline

  • Thickness: 1 pixel for sprites up to about 64 pixels; 2 or more for larger art or for a sticker look.
  • Colour: black reads on any background. A dark shade from the sprite’s own palette looks softer and more deliberate.
  • Inside: recolours the drawing’s own outer pixels, so the sprite keeps its size. Use it when the size must not change, such as in a tileset or a fixed sprite sheet.
  • Make room for the outline: grows the image by the thickness on every side. Turn it off to keep the size and accept that a sprite touching the edge is cut there.

Where an outline helps

An outline separates a sprite from a busy background, which matters most for the things a player must not lose sight of: the character, pickups, enemies.

It is also the usual way to show that something is selected or can be used: the sprite is drawn with a bright outline while the pointer is over it. Make the outlined copy here and swap between the two in the game.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser, on your own device. Your images are never sent to Moriqa or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

How do I add an outline to a sprite?

Add the sprite, set the thickness and the colour, and download the PNG. The background has to be transparent for the tool to see the sprite’s shape.

Why did my image get bigger?

The outline needs room. With Make room for the outline on, the image grows by the outline’s thickness on every side so that nothing is cut off.

Can I outline a whole sprite sheet?

Yes, as long as the frames have clear space between them. Turn off Make room for the outline so the frames stay where they are, or use Inside.

My image has no transparent background. Will it work?

Not as it is: the outline would go around the whole picture. Remove the background first with Background Remover, then add the outline.

Can I outline many sprites at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like; they all get the same outline and can be downloaded together as a ZIP.
