In detail
Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it is compressed again and loses a little more detail. PNG is lossless, so a PNG copy can be edited and saved as often as you like without getting worse.
Some apps, print services and upload forms also ask for PNG specifically.
No converter can bring back detail the JPG already lost. The PNG looks exactly like the JPG you started with; it just stops any further loss from here on.
PNG stores every pixel exactly instead of compressing photos the way JPG does, so the file is usually several times larger. If you need a small file with good quality, WebP is a good middle ground.
