In detail

Using colours from an image

Two ways to get colours

Main colours

The tool groups similar pixels together and finds the 5 to 16 colours that best describe the whole image. They are listed from the colour that covers the most of the picture to the least, with each colour’s share shown.

Colour picker

Point at the image to read the colour under the pointer, and click to keep it. You get the exact HEX and RGB value of that pixel, ready to copy.

What people use it for

  • Matching brand colours from a logo or a screenshot.
  • Building a colour scheme for a website, slide deck or room from a favourite photo.
  • Finding a palette for illustrations and pixel art.
  • Checking the exact colour of a detail in a design.

Palette file formats

  • PNG swatches: a strip of colour squares to share or keep as a reference.
  • GIMP palette (.gpl): opens in GIMP, Aseprite, Krita and Inkscape.
  • HEX list (.hex): the format used by Lospec and Aseprite.
  • CSS variables and JSON: paste straight into code.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser, on your own device. Your images are never sent to Moriqa or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

How do I find the HEX code of a colour in an image?

Add the image and click the spot you want. The exact HEX and RGB values appear under Picked colour; click either one to copy it.

How are the main colours chosen?

Similar colours are grouped, and each group is represented by its average colour. The groups covering the most of the image come first.

Can I use the palette in Aseprite, GIMP or Krita?

Yes. Download it as a GIMP palette (.gpl), which all three open, or as a .hex file for Aseprite and Lospec.

Why does the palette miss a small detail’s colour?

The main colours describe the image as a whole, so tiny areas can be merged into a nearby colour. Pick that detail directly with the colour picker, or choose more colours.
